Field Trip [for Schon]
Nov. 9th, 2015 10:11 pmIt's not often that Jim shows up in the Nexus in uniform anymore. Since it's become his getaway form work, it always seemed more prudent to just wear his everyday clothes. He's in Starfleet golds today though, kicked back in an overstuffed chair in a quiet corner of the forum, doing 'paperwork' on his PADD.
There's a nearly empty cup of coffee next to him. Maybe he's waiting for someone. Or maybe he just got tired of being bothered in his quarters. It's hard to tell, with Jim.

It seems so unlikely that Schon could be from anywhere not high magic and mysterious, like the house he'd conjured for the Halloween party. "Whenabouts is probably a relevant question to ask, too though."

Date: 2015-11-30 01:40 am (UTC)"I really didn't before Starfleet. Looking back, I can't imagine being in one place for so long."

Jim's admission gets a meditative nod from Schön. "Sometimes it takes us a while to wake up to who we truly are. Some poor souls never do."

Date: 2015-11-30 11:32 pm (UTC)"I've lived through shit you wouldn't believe, even before Starfleet. But I wasn't doing anything with my life afterward. If Pike hadn't convinced me to enlist..." Jim shrugs. "I might still be feeling sorry for myself, getting in and outta trouble with the local county. "And I'm pretty sure you're real. I don't have a good imagination, so there's no way I'd be able to make you up."

Date: 2015-12-01 03:40 am (UTC)As for the almost-life Jim might have had, "but you didn't. You woke up, found yourself. And I think your imagination is worth a second look, Captain. Has it ever failed you, when you needed a way out?"

Date: 2015-12-01 03:46 am (UTC)"I don't think lateral thinking and imagination are quite the same thing." Aren't they? Jim's known for getting out of trouble, even when things look grim. One might even say he's an expert at shooting from the hip. Whether that's instinct or imagination is hard to say. Jim's no shrink (though he really needs one).
"I bet you need an awfully good imagination for magic, huh?"

Date: 2015-12-01 04:46 am (UTC)"As for magic... imagination helps, yes. There are ways... of grasping the power, shaping it, even with only a dullard's wit. Spells by rote, blind ritual and a dash of hope."
He pauses, looking thoughtful, and gives his glass an appraising look. "Mm. This wine makes me chatty, it seems. Good to know."
"In any event, working magic without imagination is like trying to knit blindfolded when your hands are numb. Ooh, I must remember that simile, I think."

Date: 2015-12-01 05:28 am (UTC)It's probably presumptuous to assume, but Jim doesn't know if Schon has many friends. Clients, sure. Employees? Almost definitely. But friends? Jim likes to think he's one. The magi is quirky, and rarely around for all his work. But he's interesting conversation, and a good change of pace.

Date: 2015-12-01 06:08 pm (UTC)"...So is door jumping a thing you do for fun? Just poking around in random portals? Because you know where all of them are, right? Do you ever just go wandering around for the hell of it?" Jim has considered it more than a few times, but there's usually enough going on either on the ship or in the forum that he hasn't really bothered. Plus, the idea of being stranded in a strange universe inhospitable to humans is unpleasant to say the least.
