The First Annual Adopted Family Thanksgiving

It's not that Jim forgot about the second present he gave Verity way back a month ago on her birthday. How could he forget, when he'd had to dig out the key to the house to get it replicated? It's sat out on his desk in his quarters every day since, a bold reminder that Jim Kirk was seriously doing this.

Jim Kirk was going to try to have a normal family. A family who celebrated (some) holidays. A family who came together. Not a relationship. Hell no. But...you know..siblings? A family? He almost worried Sam or his mother would try to reach out to him. Thankfully no such messages yet. Which means Jim is free to spend time with the people he actually wants in his life.

And that means getting Thanksgiving put together.

He'll call Clint later. First things first. Calling Big Sister.

"Verity? It's Jim. You busy?"

Post on ahead without me for a bit, busy evening and Jim's offscreen.

"I try not to keep up with all the shit Bones has inoculated me against. Actually I try to avoid being in the medbay at all times, if I'm being honest." Of course, the way his luck runs, that still means he's in there all the time.

"Have fun, first aid kit should be in the downstairs bathroom." Jim adjusts his new little friend in the box and heads out to the barn.

"Thanks." Clint makes his way for the downstairs bathroom, and Verity's welcome to join him if she wants. "Man, I hope it's not Spanish flu, my Spanish is terrible. I can barely buy tacos." He grins, placing an imaginary order, "Uno gringo stupido con pesos, por favor."

"Thanks, Jim."

Verity will come with, in case he needs help. Or a chaperone. Possibly both. "I just wait until someone else orders something that looks tasty and then I point to that."

No she doesn't, you know better.

"The magic of Denny's," he muses, rummaging for the first aid kit. "Hey, d'you think they've still got Denny's now? Or, like, restaurants?"

"Something like that," she agrees, turning on the tap to get the hot water running. Poor primitive bastards don't have magic instant unlimited hot water here do they? "I'm sure they have restaurants. I hope they've evolved past Denny's."

"Fair enough." Nexus living is spoiling Verity something fierce. First aid kit found, Clint gets to washing his scratches. "Ah! Damn, stings."

Hey, she doesn't have an electric coffee maker anymore. She has to figure out how to use the stove first thing in the morning. There's a price for her luxuries.

For now, while he washes, she'll get bandages out and ready for him. "It could have been worse. And it's not a family outing without someone bleeding..."

The high cost of living.

"Yeah, it coulda been," he agrees. "If that's the rule, next time I'll just give myself a nosebleed right off, and we can get to the fun." When he's washed up and dried off, he'll start putting those bandages to good use. He might need a little help.

She hasn't had to pay that yet, and thank the gods; she's not the sort to come back.

"Next time, it's Jim's turn. So you can give him the nosebleed." This will, of course, not be tolerated except as a bad joke. She will punch them both if she has to to stop this no wait that won't help.

Bandages, she can help with.

Are you kidding? With her friends, her death is likely to be met with an epic quest into the underworld to get her back.

"Oh? Yeah, that's fair." Clint grins--he knows she doesn't mean it. Although her punching them both would get somebody bleeding, so they could get on with family stuff.

"You know me, always the fair one." She rolls her eyes and ponders trying to band-aid his mouth shut.

"I'm back, is Clint a were-raccoon now or did we fix everything?" Jim's letting the door clatter shut as he wanders in the back door somewhere out by the kitchen.

"Hopefully that's the only hiccup we need to worry about. Gotta get this place ready for...whatever it is people do during Thanksgiving besides drink and complain about their relatives."

"Gotta wait for the next full moon," Clint points out. "Think I'm okay, though." To Verity, he adds, "thanks for the help."

"You're welcome. I hope you're not a were-raccoon; if you turn into Rocket, Groot will never give you back to us." She'll shoo Clint out so she can clean up the mess. "Is it safe for me to send you two back to looking in the attic now?"

"The fuck's a Rocket?" Jim knows what Groot is, he sort of ran into him literally at the party. But he's not getting the joke. Whatever the joke is.

"Should be fine Ver. I've got the vacuum cleaner, let me just haul it downstairs." Jim pauses and looks at the pile of stuff that was dumped to make room for the very angry raccoon. "And...a bag or something to clean this shit up I guess."

"A talking raccoon," Clint answers, "from space. Groot's buddy. Gun nut."

"I'll get back to the attic. Decorations, right? Are the boxes marked, or do I get to rummage?"

"Rocket can talk?" Huh. "You've met him?"

Wait, work, not gossip.

"Find something to replace the box that got conscripted for Operation: Raccoon Rescue too please."

"The way Frank organized things, look for whatever's got the most dust on it and isn't surrounded by bottles. Hell if I know." There hasn't been much of anything to celebrate in the Kirk household for a long time. You're on your own there, Clint. Maybe it will have a pumpkin sticking out if you're lucky? "Actually, you know what? Fuck it. Let's just get decorations while we're out. Who even knows if any of that junk survived."

Jim grabs the vacuum and drags it downstairs, pausing to grab Verity's coat by the door and toss it her way.

"Come on, Ver. It'll be fastest to PINpoint back to the commercial district than it will be to shop locally, and I don't want anyone asking questions as to why I'm back in town." He's still got his boots on from Raccoon Rescue, so he's ready to go.

"'Come on, Ver?' What, you leaving me behind?" Clint's grumbling is teasing and good-natured, as he follows along, bringing any vacuum attachments Jim didn't grab.

She catches her coat and pulls it on. There's a hair-flip and everything. "That does sound easier. Plus, Clint and I don't legally exist here. Not unless you know some really good forgers."

Next is shoes, since neither of them have offered her a piggie back ride. "Someone has to guard the house against the raccoons, sweetie."

"I assumed you heard me say 'fuck it' Clint." Jim calls over his shoulder, grabbing hold of everyone and getting them the hell out of there.

The front door clatters loudly as Jim kicks it open (he didn't bother to lock up when they pointed out), bags of shopping in each arm.

"--because, Clint, there's more to life than leftover pizza and Dog Cops. And Verity shot down my idea too, so quit complaining." Oh family, they're getting along fantastically, but Verity wouldn't let them binge on junk food. Woe is the boys upon return.

Admittedly, Jim's idea was several bottles of wine, whiskey, and schnapps and was probably a bad idea. He needs to stop associating gatherings with blacking out drunk.

"I'm not saying we do that for Thanksgiving dinner," Clint protests. "Just, like, later. Sometime." Clint piled up on bags, determined to take as much as he could in a single trip. It may not have been the best idea, but since when do "Barton" and "the best idea" go together?

Oh yes, how dare she want them to still be hungry enough to enjoy the food she's going to spend an entire day preparing for them? How selfish of her.

If they keep this up, she might leave them to the junk food.

She's carrying a reasonable number of bags and also a box full of the more fragile things. They may not care, but this is important to her, and damn it, she's going to enjoy having a home to decorate and a family to feed until they're stuffed. Even if she has to hogtie and gag them both from now until the turkey's done.

"You guys can watch all the Dog Cops you want, so long as you turn it off for the meal." Isn't she generous? "But we're not having leftover pizza as an appetizer, and we're not going to get so drunk we don't remember the day. Let's at least wait until we know for certain it's going to suck before breaking out our bad coping mechanisms?"

She's not waiting for an answer. There's groceries to put away, so she's headed for the kitchen.

"If he figures out how to get it on the vid screen downstairs he probably will." Jim shakes his head. "Good luck trying to hook a dvd player up to that thing, though." Who's to say Clint doesn't have it downloaded onto his phone for long Avengers meetings and trips though?

He'll follow Verity into the kitchen and set the bags down on the table.

"So....what do you want us to do? Since I assume you'll be commandeering the kitchen form now until....whenever?"
